A man is in jail after allegedly taking and firing a weapon from a West Virginia State University police officer early Saturday morning. Maurice Anthony Jarrett is charged with breaking and entering, fleeing an officer and wanton endangerment, according to documents filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court.

The officer, Ronald Mercer, found Jarrett in the Davis Fine Arts building around 2:30 a.m. while locking the building, according to a report. The man initially gave the officer a wrong name, the officer said.

Jarrett was initially charged with trespassing and released. The officer returned around 3:45 a.m. to find that a wide-screen television had been taken down and positioned in a way to be transported, according to the officer's report.

It was then discovered that the man was a suspect in a number of past grand larcenies, break-ins and destruction of property cases, Mercer said in his report. …
