Okafor out for season

Philadelphia 76ers rookie center Jahlil Okafor will miss the rest of the NBA season.

In the coming days, Okafor will have arthroscopic surgery on his right knee to repair a small meniscus tear. The recovery time is six weeks and there are only 4 1/2 weeks remaining in the regular season.

Sixers coach Brett Brown downplayed the seriousness of the operation, saying he expects Okafor, the No. 3 overall pick in last summer's draft, to be at full strength long before the summer is over.

"It's going to be a 10-minute procedure," Brown said before Friday's game against the Nets. "It's going to restrict him from playing for six weeks, but because of the timing it sounds more dramatic than it probably should ... given we're not going to see him again [this season].

"But the impact it has on someone is negligible; it's stuff that you can continue to strengthen and rehab. You do take a deep breath and say 'That's not terrible, that's not bad.' "
