Irene Smaglo of Brookline has never worked in a steel mill, but one changed her life. Her father died in an accident at the Jones & Laughlin mill. Then her husband, Leo, a brakeman, was killed at the same mill at age 51. Mrs. Smaglo, who turns 100 years old today,3/ 15 worked full time into her seventies after her husband's death.

She was born on March 15, 1916, in Oakland to Felice and Henry Nedobylek. She took business classes at Fifth Avenue High School and graduated from Schenley High School. After graduation, she worked at White Linen Co.

On May 28, 1940, she married Leo M. Smaglo and they had seven children: Felicia Emanuel of Whitehall, Leon (deceased), Daniel of Baldwin Township, Teresa Newton of Castle Shannon, Mary Ann McHarg of Penn Hills, Michael of Philadelphia and Marjorie Seskey of Dormont. …
