It's not going to bring back steel jobs, but the Etsy Manufacturing initiative announced last week is a welcome step to help Pittsburgh do more of what it's known for: Making stuff.

Etsy, founded in 2005 in Brooklyn, matches the old world with the new. It began as an online marketplace for creators of artisanal goods - clothing, jewelry, quilts, knickknacks. It has since grown to serve 1.5 million makers, transacting $2.4 billion in sales a year. The tech world would call that a "scalable" business model.

As many of Etsy's sellers have grown, they need workshops bigger than spare bedrooms. Enter Pittsburgh, the third city approached by Etsy after New York and Boston. "There's so much history in the manufacturing space here," said the company's product manager, "and a mix of old manufacturing and new artisans." It will seek to link its clients with venues in Pittsburgh that can create products on a larger scale, but that also "share their values" on matters like subcontracting, safe and just workplaces and transparency. …
