Driver of 50-Pound Drug Shipment Gets Six Years

A man caught delivering more than 50 pounds of cocaine and heroin for distribution in the Jersey City area was sentenced Wednesday to nearly six years in prison by a judge who cut him a break because of his limited role in a trafficking operation.

Richard Vasquez-Rodriguez, 35, of Somerset was to be paid $1,000 for driving the drugs, hidden inside a sealed cylindrical air tank, from a parking lot in New Brunswick to Jersey City, his lawyer said.

Law enforcement officers, who had been tracking the shipment, arrested him on Jan. 16, 2014, after pulling over a Chevrolet Tahoe that, they said, was being driven erratically.

The cylinder, in the back of the vehicle, contained 19 kilograms of cocaine and 7 kilograms of heroin.

A drug ring had shipped the narcotics from Mexico and Texas, a prosecutor said. …
