ST. LOUIS COUNTY > More county police on MetroLink * Nine St. Louis County police officers and two sergeants will be added to the MetroLink detail beginning Sunday as a first wave of heightened security, Chief Jon Belmar told the police board Wednesday.

On March 9, County Executive Steve Stenger asked that the number of county officers assigned to the rail system be doubled to 44 from 22. Belmar said he will not pull officers out of neighborhood precincts, and will phase in more MetroLink patrols as new personnel are hired.

MetroLink security is shared among county and St. Louis city police, St. Clair County sheriff's deputies, Metro public safety officers and private guards. (From staff reports)

EDWARDSVILLE > Council approves plan for tax-supported project * The Edwardsville City Council approved on Tuesday night a redevelopment plan for business district that will include special tax support.

The 26.1-acre site of what will be known as the Edwardsville Town Centre is at the southeast corner of Governor's Parkway and Highway 157.

Officials said the plans called for up to 131,890 square feet of new retail and commitments already have been confirmed for Fresh Thyme Farmer's Market, McAlister's Deli, Global Brew and Dollar Tree.

The $34 million project will be constructed by Highland-based Plocher Construction. Construction will involve 100 full time and 75 part-time jobs.

Some of the costs of the project will be funded by a 1 percent sales tax on goods sold within the business district and a 1 percent hotel tax in the district.

Officials said the targeted area had not grown or developed through private investment in over two decades.

Groundbreaking is expected by this summer with the first retail tenant moving in by August 2017. …
