MEAT MADNESS * I got brackets, you got brackets, we ALL got brackets. So why not fill out another one and give a boost to Pappy's Smokehouse?

Mike Emerson's highly praised pork purveyors in the Midtown Alley are one of 32 barbecue restaurants across the U.S. that are included in a bracket posted by Thrillist, a website devoted to food, drink and travel.

In the first round, Pappy's (a seventh-seed in its bracket) goes against La Barbecue from Austin, Texas, a state where they only recently figured out you can barbecue pork. The bracket also includes 17th Street Bar & Grill in Murphysboro, Ill., which used to have a store in O'Fallon.

COVER GIRL * The St. Louis Zoo is getting some national media, courtesy of National Geographic and thanks to some of its tenants.

For the April issue of the nature magazine, the zoo's Brazilian porcupine, Piper, will be featured on some covers for a story about endangered species. (There will be 10 covers published for the edition, each featuring a different animal.)

Piper lives at the Emerson Children's Zoo, where she sometimes stars in summer stock, showcasing natural behaviors of exotic and domestic animals.

Then inside the magazine, pages 76-77, the Fennec foxes that live at our zoo also will be featured. The magazine hits newsstands March 29.

The photos were taken by National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore, who was here in October while on his quest to document about 12,000 species of animals.
