Bumps in the Road Didn't Derail Incarnate Word's Thirst for Title

BEL-NOR * This time, it was not so easy for the Incarnate Word girls basketball team.

First off, there was no Napheesa Collier, who helped guide the Red Knights to three successive Class 4 state titles before heading to the University of Connecticut.

There would also be a 49-45 loss to Ursuline on Dec. 26 Incarnate Word's first setback to an area team in 71 games and covering almost four seasons.

But guess what?

The Red Knights are right back in their usual spot, battling for yet another state title.

"A different road," senior Abbey Hoff said. "But it's still been a lot of fun."

Incarnate Word (25-4) faces rival MICDS (24-4) in a Class 4 state semifinal at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Mizzou Arena. The winner advances to the title game at 6:20 p.m. Saturday against either Owensville (24-5) or St. Joseph Benton (29-0).

The numbers say the Red Knights have not been as dominant as in years past. They compiled a 91-3 mark over the previous three seasons. They lost four games in the first month of this season.

But this group has met and conquered every challenge since suffering losses to Ursuline and Francis Howell over a three-day period, winning its last 20 games.

And the end result is another trip to Columbia the Red Knights' seventh in a row. …
