All-North Jersey Boys Fencing: Coach of Year: Gene Packer, Fair Lawn

Gene Packer picked a fine year to go out.

His Fair Lawn boys team went 9-0 in the Bergen-Passaic Fencing League to earn the Division 2 crown. The Cutters took second at the District 4 tournament to qualify for the state team tournament. Their epee squad finished first in District 4, and sophomore Ryan Griffiths won the state championship in epee.

And Fair Lawn (11-1) finished No. 2 in The Record Top Six rankings. For his excellent work directing the Cutters, Packer is The Record Boys Fencing Coach of the Year.

"That's the special ingredient about fencing - not only is it an individual sport, but the team component is just as or more important," said the 66-year-old Packer. "If I can give some of my love for fencing to them, that's where they can possibly create life memories and friendships that can last a long, long time. …
