1816 Pittsburgh was incorporated as a city under an act providing for a mayor, one select and one common council, 12 aldermen and a recorder.

1974 Most of the Arab oil-producing nations ended their five- month embargo against the United States that had been sparked by American support for Israel in the Yom Kippur War.

1990 Thieves made off with 13 works of art from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston (crime remains unsolved).
