Donations Hope to Ease Kids' Stress in Emergencies

To serve and protect. And sometimes comfort.

That's the approach being taken by Pittsburgh police Chief Cameron McLay and City Councilman Dan Gilman, who want to put a teddy bear or other stuffed animal into the hands of every child affected by an emergency.

The two have paired up to promote a drive to collect the toys in a larger effort to comfort children at the scene of an emergency or in crisis situations.

"No one wants to imagine a scenario where a young child is affected by a fire, a medical emergency, or worse, but our hope is that this is one more way our city's first responders can help care for kids affected by crisis and trauma," Mr. Gilman said.

Chief McLay says his officers often encounter people while they're having the most difficult time of their lives. The situation becomes more complicated when children are involved. …
