Christopher Mellon's commentary "Let's Agree to Be Civil" (March 18) makes a lot of sense, but it ends with the observation that perhaps it is naive to believe that the two major parties and their respective candidates can agree to observe simple, basic principles of civility in order to foster a more mature and respectful national debate.

I believe that his approach to civil discourse reform, though laudable, is misguided. We the people, as individuals, must embody the change in order for it to take place.

I know that I have had difficulty with accepting opposing points of view on gun control, a woman's right to choose, immigration policy, etc., and sometimes scoff at those idiots who can't see the Christian truth of my opinion on these issues. …
