Bullet Drops out of Officer's Gun, Fires

SADDLE BROOK -- A bullet from a police officer's service weapon fired when it fell out of his handgun and hit the pavement outside police headquarters Tuesday.

No one was hurt, though the bullet seemed to fully detonate, mangling its metal jacket. It fired as the officer was stepping out of his patrol car at headquarters around 9 a.m. while on patrol. The ammunition magazine malfunctioned, allowing one of the bullets to drop out and explode as it hit the pavement, said Police Chief Robert Kugler.

"Thank God the officer was not injured. He could have been killed," Kugler said.

The plastic plug on the end of the magazine came loose, allowing several hollow-point .40-caliber bullets to drop out. The officer gathered up the bullets and brought them back to headquarters at 63 Market St. around 9:30 a.m. …
