Coach Jamie Dixon, who has left the University of Pittsburgh men's basketball team for a coaching job at his alma mater, may have been the victim of his own high expectations.

He took over a successful program built by predecessor Ben Howland and maintained the team's winning ways for 13 years. With an overall record of 328-123 and 11 NCAA tournament appearances, Mr. Dixon raised the bar for Panthers basketball and repeatedly sold out The Pete, the fans' friendly moniker for the Petersen Events Center.

But winning seasons, conference titles and repeat tourney bids have a way of making sports diehards want more. Mr. Dixon's Panthers were twice No. 1 seeds in the NCAA tournament, but his team reached only the Elite Eight - and that was once, in 2009. …
