SARASOTA -- One person was killed and four others injured after an eastbound SUV crossed over a traffic island on Fruitville Road and vaulted into oncoming traffic Tuesday.

The crash happened at about 8 a.m. on Fruitville, between Lockwood Ridge Road and Tuttle Avenue, during the peak of the morning commute.

According to Sarasota Police, Maria Fuentes of Sarasota was driving a white Toyota 4-Runner eastbound on Fruitville when her vehicle drifted across the tree-lined median and vaulted into the air. Rocio Alanis of Sarasota was a passenger in her vehicle.

The 4-Runner struck two westbound vehicles -- a silver 2002 Mercedes-Benz driven by Vincent Serio and a 2016 Acura driven by Randy Hensen of North Port -- and rolled onto its side.

A 2004 Mercury Mountaineer driven by Sherley Hairston of Arcadia, which was traveling west behind Serio and Hensen, swerved to avoid the crash and went up onto the traffic island and hit a tree.

Hensen, 50, was pronounced dead at the scene, while Alanis, Hairston and Fuentes were transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. …
