Pittsburgh Catholic Bishop David A. Zubik said his first trip to the U.S. Supreme Court contained a couple of surprises: How small the crowded courtroom was and the intensity of the justices' questions.

He was not, however, surprised by how serious the justices were as they listened to arguments Wednesday in the Diocese of Pittsburgh's lawsuit challenging the contraception provision of the Affordable Care Act.

"When some of the justices posed their questions, they really needed clarification in their own minds, and if they didn't feel that they received it the first time around, they kept on hitting at it," the bishop said in remarks upon his return from Washington, D.C. "They would say, 'I still don't see what you mean,' and they would ask for further clarifications, which I felt was a plus sign. …
