Article excerpt

For the first time, area golf fans will not need a program to recognize seven of the players committed to the Symetra Tour's Road to the LPGA at Sara Bay Country Club, April 22-24.

"It is definitely going to be the most local players in the Guardian Retirement Championship event since I've been at the Tour," said Bret Lasky, media coordinator for the Symetra Tour.

The top name of the Sara Bay seven is 17-year-old Nelly Korda, the talented younger sister of LPGA star Jessica Korda. Nelly, who is from Bradenton, turned pro in February.

The other six are: Ericka Schneider of Lakewood Ranch, Casey Kennedy of Venice, Ginger Howard, Jennifer Neville, Christina Miller and Hally Leadbetter, all of Bradenton.

Schneider has played in eight Symetra Tour events and finished tied for 99th in the LPGA final stage qualifying school.

Kennedy played in the first Symetra Tour tournament (IOA Championship) of the year and finished tied for 47th. This is her first full year on the tour.

Howard is No. 28 on the priority list and has LPGA status, meaning she can play in any LPGA tournament that her priority number qualifies for. She has competed for four years on the Symetra Tour with five career top five finishes.

Neville is No. 245 on the priority list and played in nine events as a rookie last year. Miller is No. 236 and has yet to play a tour event.

Leadbetter is the daughter of renowned instructor David Leadbetter and an All-America player at Rollins College. She received a sponsor exemption.

All seven have one thing in common. They have played historic Sara Bay either as a member or a guest many times and know how difficult the course can be with crowned greens designed by legendary architect Donald Ross.

Sara Bay is seeking volunteers for the tournament. For more information about the tournament or volunteering, call the Sara Bay golf shop at (941) 355-7658
