1938 Six hundred Pittsburgh business and civic leaders, at a dinner in the William Penn Hotel, were informed that Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes approved the Point as a site for a historic memorial.

1951 In a message to City Council, Mayor David Lawrence outlined plans for Pittsburgh's third major redevelopment program, including the clearance of 100 acres of slums in the Hill District and construction of a public arena, 30 acres of housing and other improvements.
