Easter Shoppers Expected to Spend Record Amount

TALLAHASSEE -- Spending on chocolate bunnies, eggs, new clothes and food is expected to reach a record high this Easter, according to estimates by the Florida Retail Federation trade group.

Preparing to celebrate the holiday and stocking up on spring essentials is expected to cost shoppers an average of $146 per person for a national total of $17.3 billion, both records and significantly higher than last year's $140.62 per person and $16.4 billion total, the Federation said.

"This time of year means the arrival of good weather and good moods across Florida as consumers buy gifts, food and decorations to celebrate Easter with family and friends," said Randy Miller, federation president and CEO. "People also use this weekend to purchase supplies and essentials for the spring season, meaning increased sales for retailers. …
