The location of next year's Thunder by the Bay remains in question following a lengthy public debate Monday night.

City of Sarasota commissioners directed administrators to try to negotiate changes to the motorcycle rally's size on lower Main Street next year ahead of new construction that will limit access to the area and amid criticism that this year's event hurt downtown businesses.

Administrators will report back on those negotiations at the City Commission's meeting April 18.

The annual motorcycle rally, a free event that features two full days of live music and numerous vendors, has drawn tens of thousands of bikers to downtown Sarasota every January for the past 18 years.

The event raises money for the five agencies event host Suncoast Charities partners with to help people with disabilities and special needs.

Commissioner Susan Chapman has been the most vocal opponent

of the event, arguing "Thunder by the Bay is very invasive of downtown," adding, "We have a pretty vibrant downtown, a very active theater and restaurant scene. …
