New Teams Giving New Look to Eastern Event

The 27th annual Eastern Area invitational wrestling tournament will have a different look. The 14-team tournament Friday and Saturday at Gateway High School has three new teams, including the first entry from outside the WPIAL.

"We had three teams -- Plum, Valley and West Mifflin -- drop out a couple weeks ago," said Gateway coach R.J. Santilli. "I put a note on the internet that we needed teams and Charleroi, South Park, and Bellefonte responded. Bellefonte is the first team we've had from outside the WPIAL."

Santilli said the three teams are adequate replacements, but is disappointed to lose a pair of PIAA place-winners. "It's a shame to lose Valley's Logan Downes and Plum's Sean Clair. They are two of the best wrestlers in the WPIAL."

Defending team champion Trinity had four individual champions last year, but two have graduated. …
