NOTO Planning Workshop Will Focus on Organizational Structure

A workshop to discuss Phase II planning for the North Topeka Arts District will be April 6, with a focus on creating an organizational model for the district.

"A key component of the planning process is to assist the NOTO Arts District Board, local business and property owners and artists in crafting a new organizational model for how to manage the District on a daily basis," a release from Heartland Visioning said.

John LaMotte, a consultant hired to guide NOTO through its planning process, has pointed to challenges around special events planning, business retention and attraction, stakeholder communication, marketing and fundraising.

One example, according to Kristen Brunkow, spokeswoman for Heartland, is how special events are scheduled in the district.

"People are wanting to throw festivals and have weekend events, such as a parade, so creating a structured process around that is something they're looking into," she said.

Edie Smith, of Downtown Topeka Inc., has a process that "works really well" for the downtown area, Brunkow said, and Smith will attend the April 6 meeting to provide her model as one possibility for NOTO to adopt. …
