The Post-Gazette is totally right in addressing the issue of some communities failing to provide their own police force ("Welfare State: Hempfield and Others Should Pay for Policing," March 21 editorial). Twenty-plus years ago, Clairton was designated as a financially depressed city. To overcome the inability to pay for its police force, it sought help from the state and had troopers patrolling the streets. Once things stabilized, the state police went back to their base station in Belle Vernon.

Today, we have Hempfield using this program without making any attempt to start and maintain its own police department. I have written numerous letters concerning this issue and nothing is ever resolved.

I can't understand why my state tax dollars are used to provide state police patrol in an area that is not financially distressed. …
