By SAMUEL LUCKHURST SIR Alex Ferguson has urged United to show 'patience' with Louis van Gaal amid the club's interest in Jose Mourinho.

United have spent over Pounds 250m since Van Gaal was appointed in May 2014 and are 16 points behind Premier League leaders Leicester, having been jettisoned from the Champions League and Europa League, while they were knocked out of the League Cup by Championship club Middlesbrough.

The Reds could still win the FA Cup but there has been a clamour among supporters to sack Van Gaal.

Ferguson, who is opposed to United appointing Mourinho, believes a couple of fallow years might benefit the team.

"It is dead easy to be critical," he said.

"You have to be realistic about some things - the number of injuries he has had: Phil Jones has played only seven games this season, Ashley Young, (Antonio) Valencia, (Luke) Shaw, these are big losses. …
