Last week: Piechnick had two doubles and was intentionally walked twice in Canon-McMillan's 5-4, season-opening victory Friday against Chartiers Valley.

Check this out: Piechnick, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound senior, is considered one of the better catchers in the WPIAL. Piechnick was a first baseman as a sophomore, but moved to catcher last season. He was selected to the all-WPIAL Class AAAA Section 5 team as a junior.

* College talk: Piechnick has signed with Ohio University.

* What made you move to catcher? When I was younger, I played third base most of the time, but played some at catcher, too. I just like the whole leadership role that comes with catcher. Plus, I always felt like I had a strong enough arm to play catcher.

* Do you call your own pitches or do the coaches call them? The coaches call them this year. Last year we had different coaches and I called the pitches, unless it was a big game or big situation.
