NHL: Benn, Stars Top Coyotes to Move into First

Article excerpt

The Blues were hoping the Arizona Coyotes would do them a favor Thursday night. Forget that.

The Coyotes turned out to be road kill for the Dallas Stars, who defeated Arizona 4-1. The victory put the Stars (103 points) two points ahead of the idle Blues for the Central Division and Western Conference lead.

Jamie Benn scored his 40th goal and Antti Niemi made 31 saves for the Stars. The loss eliminated the Coyotes from playoff contention.

Benn is the Stars' first 40-goal scorer since Mike Modano in 1993- 94, the team's first season in Dallas. Only Washington's Alex Ovechkin has more goals this season (44) than the 2014-15 Art Ross Trophy winner.
