Voters of southwestern Pennsylvania have to welcome the visit to Pittsburgh and the address Thursday of Sen. Bernie Sanders, candidate for the Democratic nomination for president.

Not to endorse Mr. Sanders, but we note that he is the first of the Final Five for the party nominations - two Democrats and three Republicans - to visit Pittsburgh to present his views publicly and to ask for our votes, at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center no less. Hillary Clinton took note, too: Yesterday her campaign announced that she will visit Pittsburgh on Wednesday.

Pennsylvanians have been aware for years that the commonwealth's primary has regularly been scheduled for so late in the party campaigns as to have had virtually no impact on their outcomes. This fact has been painful to Pennsylvanians, given both that the state is the sixth largest in population and that it is regularly considered to be an important state in the final choice of American presidents. …
