Dad's Praise as Police Catch Up with Bike Thieves ; Custom-Built Cycles Taken from Car Valued at More Than Pounds 1,000 Each

A BMX-riding dad has praised police for finding his son's stolen custombuilt bike.

Thieves smashed their way into Martin Dupre's car, parked close to the National Cycling Centre at Sportcity, where his son had been racing, and snatched three expensive bikes.

But police found one of the cycles - which had been broken down into its component pieces for resale - at a house in Newton Heath after it had been advertised on Gumtree, the classified ads website.

The hunt continues for the two other bikes, which are valued at more than Pounds 1,000 each.

Martin, from London, vowed to return to Manchester despite the theft, which happened in the car park of Asda. His car was seriously damaged during the break-in, which happened while he was inside the superstore.

He said: "A big thank you to Greater Manchester Police and thank you to all the officers involved, especially the development team who dealt with me personally and were able to recover my property.

"When I told my children last night that there had been an arrest the smiles on their faces were priceless, especially when I told them that some of the parts had been recovered and I was picking them up. …
