Terry Collins didn't have to debate much about whom he would use in the outfield Sunday, and which position player would be the designated hitter in the season opener against the world champion Royals.

Collins wanted to employ his best defensive alignment and put Gold Glover Juan Lagares in center field, and shifted Yoenis Cespedes to left. Starting left fielder Michael Conforto served as the designated hitter against Royals righty Edinson Volquez at Kauffman Stadium. The plan backfired in the first inning when Cespedes dropped Mike Moustakas' one-out fly ball for an error. Moustakas scored an unearned run two batters later.

"I was pretty much locked into it," Collins said before the game. "Knowing we were going to open here I thought this was a good place and knowing who we're facing - [Dan] Duffy is an outstanding left- handed reliever but primarily they are right-handed so I had Conforto in the lineup. …
