Those who propose that conservative charity is a panacea for social problems and that it should replace public assistance are of the same mindset as the coalfield operators and their cronies at the turn of the last century. They are, perhaps willfully, ignorant of working-class and poor struggles and should read the speech that Mary Harris (Mother Jones) made in 1912, in Charleston, W.Va., to gain an enlightened, opposing view.

Typically, Christian charity comes with strings attached. The power charities hold over people and the influence they have on government is appalling. These organizations often uphold inequality, promote intolerance and racism, support conservative politics, aid war and harass the poor. Public support for these agencies has waned and they increasingly rely on government and corporate aid, diverting these monies from other worthy projects. …
