Proposed Budget Would Increase Taxes

School taxes could increase significantly in Mt. Lebanon if board members approve the preliminary $66.4 million 2004-05 budget introduced Monday night.

Board members voted 5-3 to approve the preliminary budget, which calls for a 3-mill tax increase to fund such items as foreign language instruction in the elementary schools and 15 to 17 new hires, including elementary guidance counselors. Millage would rise to 23.16, meaning the owner of a $200,000 home would pay $4,632 next year.

Sheldon Campbell, Rene Garson, Ron Hoffman, Carol Walton and Sue Rose voted for the budget while Jim Blazeck, Jean Palcho and Rodney Shepherd dissented. Joe Rodella was absent but his prepared statement supported the budget.

The budget includes a 10.7 percent increase in expenses over this year's and would push spending to nearly $12,000 per pupil. …
