A Capitol Idea Washington Elementary Pupils Accept Knoll's Invitation to Visit Harrisburg

Fourth-graders at Washington Elementary School put in a long day Monday, but it wasn't in their usual classrooms. The pupils visited the state Capitol as the personal guests of Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll.

Knoll was one of several local and state politicians who visited the fourth-grade classes recently as part of their study of Pennsylvania government. But she was the only one to invite the pupils to visit her.

"We kind of struck up a little bond with her," said fourth-grade teacher Jim Pascarella. That bond led Knoll to invite the pupils to visit her in her digs at the Capitol, and teachers at the school decided to take her up on the offer.

The group boarded buses at 7 a.m. Monday to head for Harrisburg. About 75 pupils made the trip, along with teachers and staff from the school. …
