The Children's Institute will open a pediatric clinic this week in Monroeville for patients with diabetes and endocrine disorders.

There is a severe, national shortage of specialists in pediatric diabetes and endocrinology, according to institute spokeswoman Melissa Anderson. She said the clinic will be one of only two such programs in the region. Children's Hospital runs one in Oakland.

The diseases are treated differently in children than in adults because children are still growing and metabolize drugs differently. They also may suffer from impeded growth, delayed puberty, early puberty or ambiguous genitalia.

Dr. Vered Lewy, a specialist in pediatric endocrinology, will head the clinic. She will be assisted by registered nurse Cindy Puchtler and dietitian Jodi Smith. …
