Brownback Names New Corrections Secretary

Gov. Sam Brownback named Joseph "Joe" Norwood as corrections secretary Monday, ending a search process that began after the last secretary left in December.

Norwood currently serves as the northeast regional director for the Federal Bureau of Prisons and has been in corrections for more than 30 years. The Senate must confirm his appointment.

Norwood would replace interim corrections secretary Johnnie Goddard and past secretary Ray Roberts, who had served in the position from the beginning of the Brownback administration in January 2011 until this past December.

"I look forward to returning to Kansas and leading the Corrections system," Norwood said in a statement. "The Corrections system has an excellent reputation. …
