Jones Represents United's Past, Not the Way Forward

IT was not as widespread as at Fellaini's withdrawal against West Ham last month, but the handful of United supporters on Monday night who sarcastically cheered Phil Jones' substitution were still heard.

Predictably, the reaction was more caustic online. 'Phil Jones is not a United player', 'He should be sold in the summer' and 'looked like he couldn't be a***d' were just some of the withering verdicts.

Jones has not played for the seniors since January 2 and lasted 76 minutes against an ebullient and unforgiving Chelsea attack.

But any slack he might have been cut was rescinded when Ashley Young completed 90 minutes. Young is 31 in July and has not played since January 17 yet, in an unfamiliar role up front, his work-rate and endeavour were remarkable and an example to his young team- mates. …
