Man, 86, Who Ran over Neighbour Is Detained to Protect the Public

A MAN of 86 who repeatedly drove over his 83-year-old neighbour in a bid to maim him has been detained in hospital for public protection.

Vincent Simpson was suffering from a combination of mental disorders including paranoid psychosis and an 'organic brain syndrome' of dementia when he attacked Norman Harrison, who lost a leg. A court heard both men, from Rochdale, were 'neighbourly and friendly' until 2009 when the defendant began to 'erroneously' accuse Mr Harrison of petty wrongdoing.

This led to Mr Harrison and his late wife, Gladys, of Quarry Street, Shawforth, receiving nuisance calls and being falsely blamed for a speeding offence committed by Simpson. On August 27, 2014, Mr Harrison walked past Simpson's home en route to his nearby lock-up garage. …
