RUTHERFORD -- Without any fanfare or protests, the borough on Monday night became the latest North Jersey school district to introduce a policy that aims to protect the rights of transgender students.

The borough Board of Education introduced the anti- discrimination policy at its meeting, joining other Bergen County towns such as East Rutherford, Carlstadt, North Arlington and Mahwah, which have already adopted such rules.

The policy, which permits students to use restrooms and locker rooms based on their gender identity, has sparked a controversy and debate at the Pascack Valley Regional High School District in Montvale. That school board on Monday afternoon reintroduced its transgender policy, and has been threatened with a lawsuit by the Liberty Counsel, a Florida-based conservative legal-aid group.

At Rutherford's meeting, the board voted in favor of a number of new policies, including the one regarding transgender rights, but it did not discuss that policy individually. …
