Curfew Expansion in 4th Ward Up for Vote

PATERSON -- A plan to expand the city's business curfew to cover two crime-ridden sections of 12th Avenue in the 4th Ward is scheduled for a final vote next week.

The measure would require bars, liquor stores, restaurants and most other businesses in the designated areas to close by midnight.

The new additions to the hot-spot ordinance would cover 12th Avenue from East 18th to East 24 streets and from Straight to Auburn streets. Both areas are plagued by open-air drug sales, shootings and other crimes. Groups of young men frequently hang around near liquor stores that currently stay open as late as 3 a.m., according to officials and residents.

During the first year that the business curfew was imposed in 15 other sections of the city, Paterson police say, the number of shootings in those areas went down by almost 80 percent.

"The 4th Ward deserves the same quality of life everybody else in the city gets," said Councilwoman Ruby Cotton. "They should be able to go to bed at night. …
