HURRICANE - The spring prep sports season has become the domain of the Hurricane Redskins in recent years. The school's softball team has won two of the last three Class AAA state championships, its baseball squad won the 2014 state title and is a regular threat to emerge as the champion in an always-competitive Region 4. The Redskins girls track team won the state title in 2014 as well before sharing the crown with rival Winfield a year ago.

Needless to say, the bar is set fairly high for Hurricane student- athletes between Easter and graduation.

It is also not surprising that one of the Redskins' top female track athletes said Thursday that she and the rest of her team have a long way to go before considering themselves championship material.

"I think it's just heart, honestly, sophomore Lexi Crompton said after a third-place finish in the 100 meter hurdles at Hurricane's own Sheetz Invitational.

"Some people need to care more. We need to show up at practice and actually work instead of goofing off.

Crompton ran her first race of the night in 15.91 seconds, finishing behind winner Safiyyah Mitchell from Huntington (15.25) and Winfield all-around star athlete Mary Lawman (15.44).

Crompton runs the 100- and 300-meter hurdles and competes in the high jump for the Redskins. Coach Eric Cooper cited her as a key component in Hurricane's run for a third consecutive state title, and in the cold rain at Redskins Stadium on Thursday she looked and sounded the part as much off the track as she did on it.

Her criticism wasn't a personal attack as much as it was the voice of a natural leader.

Crompton went on to win the 300-meter hurdles by more than a half- second over Winfield senior Jordan Pauley, finishing in 48.60 seconds. She finished third in the high jump, at 5-foot.
