'Friends' Lend a Hand with English Skills ; AWARD-WINNING VOLUNTEERS HELP PEOPLE TO LEARN LANGUAGE

VOLUNTEERS at an award-winning Manchester project are helping members of their community improve their English language skills.

The Talk English Project focuses on making English language learning more effective by taking it out of the traditional classroom setting and into the community.

Since the project's inception in February 2014, more than 200 volunteers have been recruited and trained as teachers and Talk English 'friends' in Manchester.

They have supported more than 1,800 Manchester residents to access Talk English courses across the city.

The volunteers' work has made a huge difference to their local communities, and as a result they were awarded the Volunteer of the Year (Groups) award in the latest Be Proud Awards.

The free Talk English courses are suitable for beginners. Meetings at Talk English cafes - at community centres around the city - can give learners a chance to practise speaking and listening skills in an informal environment supported by trained volunteers. …
