Journalists are used to being second-guessed by readers when reporting on terrible things that happen. And there's nothing like bad news to generate an impulse to blame the messenger, especially if the messenger is a 9-year-old reporter.

Like any journalist, Hilde Kate Lysiak, publisher and chief reporter for Orange Street News, prides herself on getting the news first and getting it right. OSN purports to be "the only newspaper of Selinsgrove, Pa.," a sleepy community of 5,000 not too far from Harrisburg.

Hilde is a purveyor of what is often called hyper-localism in newspaper jargon. From roaming bears to flower pot vandalism to the town's shrinking business district, Hilde is covering everything that happens in her community. Recently, she was the first to publish news about a suspected murder after consulting with contacts in law enforcement.

Still, the proximity of a young person to such a brutal crime has caused many in Selinsgrove to question her parents' judgment. …
