Security Alert as Drone Seen Hovering over Strangeways

A SECURITY alert was sparked by a drone which was spotted flying over Strangeways prison.

A prison officer saw the craft hovering over HMP Manchester and suspected it was fitted with a camera.

The guard, who was posted on the high-security prison's Charlie Wing, saw the drone after hearing the noise being made by its four engines.

Suspecting a security breach, the staff member immediately told the Emergency Control Room and Dogs Team. A memo, which was sent around the prison, states: "Shortly afterwards, the drone disappeared over the wall without dispatching anything."

Glyn Travis, assistant secretary of the Prison Officers Association, said: "Drones are becoming the major security threat.

"In these incidents they might not have been carrying contraband, but they could easily be used for surveillance. …
