Gateway Grad Dalton Earns First Pro Win

Gateway graduate Matt Dalton, a relief pitcher with the Toronto Blue Jays' Rookie team at Pulaski (Va.), picked up his first win as a pro last Thursday -- a 5-4 verdict over Bluefield (W. Va.).
The recent Virginia Tech graduate tossed 2 1/3 innings and allowed three hits and one run.
He gave up a run in the eighth inning that knotted the game at 4- 4, but pitched a scoreless ninth. A run in the bottom of the ninth gave Pulaski and Dalton the win.
Heading into yesterday's play, Dalton was 1-0 with a 4.85 ERA in nine games. The right-handed submarine thrower had tossed 13 innings and had allowed 21 hits, walking just one batter and striking out 15.
Dalton signed with the Toronto organization as a free agent after a brilliant senior season at Virginia Tech in which he tied the school single-season record for saves with 14. …
