Butler County's World War II Memorial will likely be dedicated on Veterans Day 2004, in part so that the county's veterans can be there.

The dedication isn't planned for Memorial Day weekend next year because many local veterans are expected to travel to Washington, D.C., at that time for the May 29 dedication of the new National World War II Memorial on the Mall.

The volunteer committee raising private funds for Butler's World War II memorial will make a final decision on when to dedicate the local monument by the end of the year, according to John Cyprian, chairman of the committee.

More than half the $300,000 needed to build the monument has been raised.

The committee is in the middle of a fund-raising effort, and individuals, families and businesses still can contribute $200 for granite stones inscribed with the name, service branch and years of service for honorably discharged veterans from any era. …
