Nine Displaced as Fire Rips through Hackensack House

HACKENSACK -- A fire tore through the roof of a two-family home on Clinton Place on Tuesday evening, causing significant damage and displacing nine people who lived in the 2 1/2-story structure.

Firefighters from at least six municipalities were at the scene, with some dousing the attic from the second floor as the fire raged above them. Much of the roof appeared to be badly damaged and the first floor appeared to have sustained significant water and smoke damage.

"I don't know what we're going to do," said Luis Cabezas, who lived with his family on the first floor. "We have nowhere to go."

Authorities said no one was injured in the fire, and it was under control by about 8:15 p.m. They did not immediately provide information about the cause of the fire, saying it was under investigation. But the fire appeared to have begun in the attic, where flames leaped from a dormer at one point. …
