Isaiah Whitehead helped Seton Hall this season to its first NCAA tournament bid since 2006. On Tuesday, he accomplished something no Pirate had done since 2004.

Whitehead, a sophomore point guard, was named the winner of the Haggerty Award as the top player in the metropolitan area, as voted upon by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association. Whitehead is the 11th Seton Hall player to win in the 81-year history of the award. The most recent was point guard Andre Barrett, who shared the honor with Manhattan's Luis Flores in 2004.

Whitehead, who averaged 18.2 points and 5.1 assists this season, recently declared for the NBA Draft but didn't hire an agent. He received his award at a ceremony in Tarrytown, N.Y,. on Tuesday night and was planning to fly today to Las Vegas to begin training for the predraft combine. …
