How Does the St. Louis Zoo Compare?

Article excerpt

The St. Louis Zoo is looking for a hand paying its bills.

Zoo officials have recently begun a tour of local county councils, hoping to get a sales tax on the ballot in St. Charles, Jefferson and Franklin counties and perhaps in St. Louis and St. Louis County.

Some think the zoo should instead charge an entry fee for visitors who live outside St. Louis or St. Louis County where property owners already pay a zoo tax.

The Columbus Zoo & Aquarium, in Ohio, just increased prices for nonresidents. "It's not without its challenges," said zoo executive Patty Peters. "We're working through it."
