St. Louis County Voters Will Be Asked in November to Decide on Funding for Senior Programs

CLAYTON * St. Louis County voters will have an opportunity to decide whether to increase property tax bills to fund $11.7 million in programs to assist senior citizens.

The County Council on Tuesday narrowly approved a measure to place the issue on the November ballot.

The funding, if approved, would generate revenue to meet transportation, health care, housing and other needs of county residents 60 years and older.

Democratic Councilwoman Hazel Erby pointed out that the measure will also raise the property taxes paid by seniors.

"I'm concerned about imposing a new tax on the very people we are trying to help," said Erby, who abstained from voting on the proposal.

Democrat Pat Dolan, one of four council members supporting the bill, said passage would give voters the final say on the matter. …
