Mets Crossing Fingers for Degrom's Session

Article excerpt

NEW YORK - If all goes according to plan, the most important pitches thrown by a Mets starter today will come during a bullpen session at the team's complex in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

That's the probable venue for Jacob deGrom's scheduled session, according to general manager Sandy Alderson, and a pain-free outing could allow him to rejoin the rotation soon.

If there are any complications, the Mets may be forced to put deGrom (sore right lat) on the disabled list, and their vaunted pitching staff would suffer a blow fewer than two weeks into the season.

"If he cannot throw a side - he hasn't played catch to be honest - we'll probably have to consider something else because we don't want to continue to play that short for another two weeks," manager Terry Collins said Wednesday. "We'll certainly have to wait and see where we're at."

As the Mets have endured a slow start, deGrom's status lingers, and could put the team's pitching depth to the test.

DeGrom, who's in Florida with his family after the birth of his son, Jaxon, already has missed one start, and his spot in the rotation comes up Tuesday against the Phillies.

Logan Verrett started Wednesday for deGrom, throwing six scoreless innings in the 2-1 win over Miami.

"We will know more [today]," Alderson told The Record in an email.

The Mets are trying to keep their options open with the right- hander, but soon will have to make a decision on his status.

Keeping him active affected the roster composition in the Marlins series, and the Mets are short one bench player and are carrying an extra pitcher.

Verrett had served as the long man before taking the start, and moving him to the rotation resulted in the Mets having to recall Rafael Montero to fill the final bullpen spot.

To activate Montero, the team demoted Eric Campbell, which left it with just four bench players for Wednesday's win. …
