Penn-Trafford on Collision Course with Norwin in Section 3

The Penn-Trafford boys volleyball team has never won a section title. Coach Jim Schall hopes the Warriors will end that streak this season.

Penn-Trafford entered Thursday night's match against Gateway with a 5-0 record in Class AAA Section 3 and was tied with Norwin for the section lead. Both teams could be unbeaten when they meet Tuesday at Norwin.

"It's still early, but Tuesday's match against Norwin will play a big part in who wins the section title," Schall said. "It looks like it will come down to a three-team race between Norwin, Latrobe and us."

Latrobe entered Thursday night's match against Norwin with a 4-1 record. The Wildcats' only loss was to Penn-Trafford.

"There are a bunch of really good teams in Class AAA [in the WPIAL] this season," Schall said. "There isn't a clear-cut favorite."

Penn-Trafford is led by two outside hitters who were voted to the second team of the WPIAL Class AAA All-Star Team last year: senior Brendan O'Toole and junior Brandon McGowan. Junior setter Joe Salesi is also a returning starter.


Montour is a Class AA team with a Class AAA schedule. The Spartans have already participated in the North Allegheny Invitational and Derry Invitational, two tournaments dominated by Class AAA schools.

The Spartans will face their stiffest challenge Saturday at the Koller Classic, a tournament at Central York High School that is considered one of the strongest in the state.

"We go for the competition," coach Mike Vavrek said. "Playing tougher teams give the kids experience against quality competition. We held our own in the first two tournaments. We're hoping for the same this weekend."

Montour is one of four WPIAL teams entered in the 25-team Koller Classic. The others are North Allegheny, Ambridge and Derry. Also entered in the tournament are both defending PIAA champions, Landisville Hempfield and Northeastern. …
